Use Your Computer to Help Others
Jul 30, 2009 --
Want to learn more about the range of problems that your computer could work on? Stanford University has a "Folding at Home" project which is always looking for additional help. Your computer can "fold" (compute) proteins while you are using it for other things, and when you are out for lunch or simply not pounding a key, it will work even harder. (Don't worry: if your computer is helping these non-profit organizations you are not creating a security problem for yourself, nor will your computer slow down.) To learn more about how you can contribute to the Stanford projects, visit http://folding.stanford.edu/, where your computer can work on Alzheimers research, ALS (Lou Gherigs Disease), some cancers, or many other diseases. The World Community Grid (at http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/) also has a protein folding option for the following topics
Help Cure Muscular Dystrophy - Phase 2
Influenza Antiviral Drug Search
Help Fight Childhood Cancer
The Clean Energy Project
Nutritious Rice for the World
Help Conquer Cancer
Discovering Dengue Drugs – Together
Human Proteome Folding - Phase 2 Project
FightAIDS@Home Project
How Grid Computing Works
There are many other options for your computer to work on. Look at the BOINC project list: http://boinc.berkeley.edu/projects.php
JoeBay U can help you set up any of these projects so you can help others.
