Backups
Jul 7, 2009 --

Backups can be made on to removable media like CD's or DVD's, on to removable memory like flash (sometimes called thumb) drives, on to external (or even internal) hard drives, and on to "cloud" servers (like iDisk if you have an Apple "MobileMe" account). Backups to hard drives and cloud servers can be set up to be automatic, so you don't have to think about doing them.

What matters is that you have a backup concept (using one or more of these procedures) and that you do it regularly. It costs virtually nothing and takes virtually no time and when your hard drive dies, the smug satisfaction that you have a complete and recent backup will more than make up for the minor inconvenience of replacing the failed drive, which is worth Way More than the homicidal/ suicidal feelings you will have when you don't have a backup and everything that you held near and dear has irrevocably dematerialized.
