Orcas Island Fire Department

The Orcas Island Fire Department has taken several JoeBay U courses over the past twenty years to acquire and understand new digital tools (computers, software, cameras, printers) and to improve service to the community (road index). The Public Information Officer and various chiefs over the years have taken JoeBay U courses to learn how to become more efficient and effective with digital tools. When the E-911 dispatch and associated road names were created many years ago, the manager of the system did not provide Orcas Fire with any means by which volunteer responders could actually locate what suddenly became, then, over 500 new road names. JoeBay U created a database of all road names and their associated connecting road, neighborhood, and map location so that volunteers could instantly know where on Orcas they were responding to when an incident occured.(the link shows the first ten pages of the road index). The photo (circa 2004) shows, on the left, JoeBay U's principal instructor, a 20 year veteran of the Orcas Fire Department, with the other two intrepid members of the Doe Bay Station.
