One Laptop Per Child comes to Orcas Island
OLPC (One Laptop Per Child) is an organization founded to promote international educational equality and literacy. OLPC created the XO laptop, a little green education machine, for children who are part of the bottom billions on the planet. OLPC Orcas has acquired several of these educational tools which are now being used, with great joy and success, in the Orcas Island Elementary School. OLPC-Orcas.org was created in iWeb, an Apple iLife tool, in order to 1) announce the success of this project, 2) solicit public participation in identifying needy students and volunteers, and 3) provide a fundraising opportunity to support and advance the project. OLPC Orcas began in the spring of 2008 with 2 XO laptops. In the spring of 2009, thanks to support from generous donors, the project has 7 XO laptops. The short term goal is to acquire another 3 XO laptops and to inspire a volunteer to become the Executive Director so that this micro-non-profit educational initiative can gain further traction in supporting disadvantaged and special needs children on Orcas.
JoeBay U staff are volunteering time to teach programming to the 4th grade children using the graphics oriented programming languages built into the XO (Turtle Art, Pippy, and Etoys).
